UMH x Sonnländer (EDEKA)

United Manufacturing Hub transforms Sonnländer's production ecosystem

Sonnländer, a fully-owned subsidiary of EDEKA, Germany's largest supermarket chain, is a leading producer of store-branded juices such as "ALBI" and "Gut&Günstig". With multiple highly automated and modern production facilities across Germany and Europe, Sonnländer is responsible for controlling multiple supply chains, e.g. from apple harvesting to juice production.

Seamless data integration

Challenge

Sonnländer was faced with the complexity of managing a diverse range of data silos across its operations.

These included Energy Management Solutions tracking the energy consumption of machines and buildings, Water Irrigation Platforms used at their farms, and various ERP systems holding crucial production data.

Additionally, their machinery, communicating via a myriad of different protocols such as OPC/UA, S7, Modubus, and LoRaWAN, added another layer of complexity.

The aim was to consolidate all this data in one place to reduce future integration efforts and to ensure data availability at all times, essentially creating a Unified Namespace (UNS).

Solution

The United Manufacturing Hub (UMH) offered a comprehensive solution to Sonnländer's challenge.

The UMH provided a platform to aggregate data from different sources, effectively breaking down the data silos. By translating various machine protocols into a unified language, UMH enabled Sonnländer to have a single-source-of-truth for their data, greatly simplifying their data landscape.

Implementation

With UMH, Sonnländer could digitally transform an entire factory with just one person in a matter of weeks, dedicating only two hours per week.

The UMH platform provided a seamless deployment process that required minimal time and resources.
