Centralized Version Management
UMH provides a centralized version management system, ensuring that all included components like Redpanda, Benthos, HiveMQ, Grafana, and Node-RED are at compatible versions. This eliminates the complexities of managing versions for each component individually and reduces the risk of incompatibility issues.
Multiple Release Channels
We offer three distinct release channels to cater to different needs:
- Stable
Access: Community Members
Purpose: Provides the most reliable and thoroughly tested versions for general use. Excludes certain checks (e.g., OS version checks) to minimize disruptions.
- Nightly
Access: Internal Use by Development Team
Purpose: Hosts the latest updates and features for testing before they are deemed stable. Ideal for testing new features in a controlled environment.
- Enterprise
Access: Enterprise Customers Only
Purpose: Tailored for enterprise environments with additional production checks and specific requirements, such as enforced use of recommended OS versions.
End-to-End Testing
Every UMH release undergoes automatic end-to-end testing against specified test scenarios, which ensures that an update does not break exiting functionality. For this, we have a large wall of different edge devices and PLCs, and over 10 cloud instances running Rocky Linux on different versions, and we test with various combinations of those to check that nothing breaks.
Simplified Upgrade Process
Upgrading UMH is as simple as clicking a button in the Management Console. The system handles all the complexities in the background, including updating the Helm Chart, playing in database migrations, rollback/fallback mechanisms, ensuring a smooth and hassle-free upgrade experience.
Proactive CVE Tracking (Enterprise Only)
For our enterprise customers, we proactively track Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) for all used software. We fix issues promptly and inform you about any security gaps, simplifying the effort needed on your side to monitor the plethora of tools. You can rely on UMH to keep your systems up-to-date and secure.
Minimize Downtime with Rolling Upgrades
Leveraging Kubernetes and its rolling update capabilities, UMH performs upgrades with minimal downtime. This ensures continuous operation and reduces disruptions during the upgrade process.
For additional assurance, customers can implement Blue-Green Deployment strategies or set up customer-specific test UMH instances. This approach provides an extra layer of safety, allowing you to test upgrades in a controlled environment before rolling them out to production systems.
Manual Updates for Grafana and Node-RED
While UMH ensures that Grafana and Node-RED are up-to-date during new installations, we leave subsequent updates of these tools to the user. This approach prevents unexpected issues that could arise from automated updates, such as incompatibilities with community plugins that these tools heavily rely on.
